Dante Giacosa
Dante Giacosa was an Italian automobile engineer and the designer of the 1936 Fiat 500 Topolino 2-seat economy car. In 1957, Giacosa redesigned the 500 as a 4-seater with updated mechanics and looks, and re-launched it as the Fiat Nuova 500 for which he was awarded Italy’s Compasso d’Oro industrial design prize in 1959. Giacosa designed over 30 cars during his career and retired as director of Fiat’s engineering division in 1970.
Fiat Nuova 500
Affordable, easy to drive in narrow Italian streets, simple to repair and cute as a button, the Fiat 500 and Nuova 500 captured the spirit of Italian post-war enthusiasm for life and gave a new generation of Italians mobility and freedom. The car represented the antithesis of contemporary American automotive culture and is now part of the collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. So closely associated with Italian lifestyle, a first-generation Fiat 500 was featured as “Luigi” in the Disney animated film Cars 2.
