Red Blue Chair

Gerrit Rietveld

Gerrit Rietveld was a Dutch furniture maker and architect, and a leading member of the De Stijl artistic movement which began in Leiden in 1917. De Stijl embraced simple geometric shapes and strong primary colors to pursue an essential abstraction of form. Rietveld hoped to apply De Stijl principles in the mass-production of furniture in his own factory.

Red Blue Chair

Rietveld’s Red Blue Chair is the ultimate expression of the De Stijl vision. Despite its name, the Red Blue Chair was originally produced in unstained beech wood. It wasn’t until the early 1920s that De Stijl colleague Bart van der Leck suggested the iconic colors it is now known for.
