Diamond Chair

Harry Bertoia

Harry Bertoia was an Italian-American sculptor who created a wide range of works in metal, from nature-inspired jewelry to furniture to massive “sounding sculptures”. Bertoia’s works are in the collections of many of the world’s most important museums including the Solomon Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the British Museum.

Diamond Chair

The elegant Diamond Chair was designed by Bertoia in 1952. Made from welded and chromed steel rods bent to form parabolic contours, the Diamond Chair was described by Bertoia this way: “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them." Its sculptural design simplicity coupled with its construction using an unusual industrial material, have elevated the Diamond Chair to pure art and guaranteed its place as an icon of 20th-century furniture design.
