Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect, interior designer, writer and lecturer. Wright designed hundreds of structures of every type including private residences, office buildings, churches and museums. He followed an “organic architecture” philosophy of harmony of structure and natural setting. He is widely considered one of America’s greatest architects.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Established in 1939, the Guggenheim displays a world-class collection of impressionist, modern and contemporary art. Imagining the new museum structure, Wright wrote to Solomon Guggenheim in 1943: “I can see a tall building of a new type perfectly appropriate to our purpose, having a monumental dignity and great beauty.” Wright designed a single long, spiraling interior that provides an ascending experiential presentation of the collection. The building opened in 1959, and indeed, perhaps the first work of art one sees when visiting the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, is the building itself.
